Udmurt

Udmurt is a member of the Volgaic branch of the Uralic language family, and is therefore related to Finnish and Estonian. It is spoken by the Udmurt people, who live mainly in the Udmurt Republic in western Russia. There are also small Udmurt-speaking communities in Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Udmurt has two dialects, Eastern and Western. The two are quite similar, but there are some differences in pronunciation and vocabulary. The Western dialect is closer to Finnish, while the Eastern dialect is closer to Estonian. The Udmurt alphabet is based on the Cyrillic alphabet, and uses all of the Russian alphabet's letters except Ё, Є and Э. In addition, there are four extra letters: Ӝ, Һ, Ү and Ҫ. The Udmurt language is an endangered language, as fewer and fewer people are speaking it. In the Udmurt Republic, only about 15% of the population speaks Udmurt as their first language. Most Udmurts are bilingual in Russian, and many younger Udmurts only speak Russian.
