Northern Haida

The Northern Haida language, also known as Masset, is a member of the Haida language family. It is spoken in two dialects, Masset and Skidegate, which are mutually intelligible. The Masset dialect is spoken in the Masset area of Haida Gwaii, while the Skidegate dialect is spoken in the Skidegate area. According to the 2016 census, there are only 14 speakers of Northern Haida, all of whom are over the age of 65. However, there is a growing movement to revive the language, and efforts are being made to teaching it to young people. The Northern Haida language is notable for its use of consonant clusters, which are not found in other languages. For example, the word for "killer whale" is written as skwáay and pronounced as /skwaːj/. The Northern Haida language is also notable for its unique vocabulary. For example, the word for "house" is different from the word for "housepost". The word for "house" is hlGwaii, while the word for "housepost" is tlGwaii. The Northern Haida language is endangered, but there are efforts being made to revive it. If successful, it will be a unique addition to the linguistic diversity of the world.
