Lower Sorbian

Lower Sorbian is a Slavic language spoken in parts of eastern Germany. It is one of the three Sorbian languages, along with Upper Sorbian and Wendish. Lower Sorbian is spoken in the historical region of Lower Lusatia, which is now located in the German states of Brandenburg and Saxony. The Lower Sorbian language is thought to have originated in the 10th century. It is written in the Latin alphabet and has around 500,000 speakers. Lower Sorbian is a German minority language and is recognized as such by the German government. Lower Sorbian has two main dialects: Cottbus and Kamenz. The Cottbus dialect is spoken in the city of Cottbus and the surrounding area, while the Kamenz dialect is spoken in the city of Kamenz and the surrounding area. The Lower Sorbian language is endangered, as many of its speakers are elderly. However, there are efforts to revitalize the language, including Lower Sorbian language courses offered at the University of Applied Sciences in Cottbus.
