British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are a group of volcanic islands in the Caribbean that make up a British Overseas Territory. The islands are situated to the east of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, and to the north of the Lesser Antilles. The main islands in the group are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, and there are around 50 smaller islands and cays. The capital city is Road Town on Tortola, and the population of the territory is around 30,000. The islands were originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib peoples, and were settled by the British in 1666. The islands were used as a base for the British to attack the Spanish colonies in the area, and they also became a haven for pirates. The British Virgin Islands were administered as part of the British Leeward Islands colony until they were detached in 1672, and they became a separate colony in 1773. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the islands were a major sugar-producing colony, with large plantations worked by African slaves. After the abolition of slavery in 1834, the economy declined and many of the plantations were abandoned. The islands became a Crown colony in 1860, and remained under direct British rule until 1967, when they were given self-government. The British Virgin Islands are now a thriving tourist destination, with visitors coming to enjoy the tropical climate, stunning beaches and clear waters. The islands are also a popular sailing destination, and are home to the world-famous sailing race, the America’s Cup.
