Chad is a landlocked country in central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest, and Niger to the west. Chad has several regions, each with its own distinct geography and history. The Sahara Desert covers much of Chad's northern third. The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert and covers much of North Africa. In Chad, the Sahara is divided into two regions: the Tanezrouft, which is a barren, sandy plain; and the Libyan Desert, which is a rocky plateau. The Tanezrouft is home to Chad's largest lake, Lake Fitri. The Sahel is the region south of the Sahara Desert. The Sahel is a semi-arid region that experiences long periods of drought. In Chad, the Sahel is divided into two regions: the Lake Chad Basin in the west, and the Kanem Basin in the east. The Lake Chad Basin is home to the country's largest lake, Lake Chad. The Kanem Basin is home to Chad's capital, N'Djamena. The Sudanese Savanna is the region between the Sahel and the Sudan. The Sudanese Savanna is a tropical grassland that receives more rainfall than the Sahel, but less than the Sudan. In Chad, the Sudanese Savanna is divided into two regions: the Guera Massif in the west, and the Ennedi Plateau in the east. The Guera Massif is home to Chad's second largest lake, Lake Yoa. The Ennedi Plateau is a dry, rocky plateau. The Sudan is the region south of the Sudanese Savanna. The Sudan is a tropical region that experiences high levels of rainfall. In Chad, the Sudan is divided into two regions: the Mayo-Kebbi East in the west, and the Mayo-Kebbi West in the east. The Mayo-Kebbi East is home to Chad's third largest lake, Lake Fitri. The Mayo-Kebbi West is a wetland region.
