Réunion is a French island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and southwest of Mauritius. The island has a population of about 844,000 people and is a department of France.
The island is of volcanic origin, with a central peak, Piton des Neiges, that is 3,069 m (10,062 ft) high. The coastline is about 160 km (99 mi) long, with many beaches and cliffs. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to April.
Réunion is known for its Creole culture, as well as its surfing and hiking. The island is also home to the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
Réunion was discovered by the Portuguese in 1507, but was later claimed by the French. The island was used as a penal colony from 1796 to 1952. It became a department of France in 1946.
Réunion is a popular tourist destination, with visitors from France, as well as other parts of the world. The island is also a popular destination for honeymoons.
