R is a programming language and free software environment for statistical computing and graphics supported by the R Foundation for Statistical Computing. The R language is widely used among statisticians and data miners for developing statistical software and data analysis. Polls, surveys of data miners, and studies of scholarly literature databases show that R's popularity has increased substantially in recent years. R is an implementation of the S programming language combined with lexical scoping semantics, inspired by Scheme. S was created by John Chambers while at Bell Labs. R was created by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and is currently developed by the R Development Core Team. The team is led by Hadley Wickham. R is a GNU package. The source code for the R software environment is written primarily in C, Fortran, and R itself. R is freely available under the GNU General Public License, and pre-compiled binary versions are provided for various operating systems like Linux, Windows, and Mac. R is a vector programming language with an easy syntax that allows users to write their own functions. It also has an extensive collection of statistical and graphical methods. The R language is widely used in many fields such as medicine, finance, and marketing. R is an open source project with contributions from many developers. The R Development Core Team is the main body that coordinates development, but there are also many other contributors. R is available for download from the CRAN website.
