C Shell is a Unix shell created by Bill Joy while he was a graduate student at University of California, Berkeley in the late 1970s. The C Shell is not related to the C programming language. The name "C Shell" is a reference to the TENEX C shell, one of Joy's favorite programs. C Shell is a command interpreter that provides a traditional Unix shell environment. It has a number of features that allow users to customize their environment and to automate common tasks. C Shell also provides a number of built-in commands for working with files, processes, and directories. C Shell is available on a number of Unix-like operating systems, including macOS, FreeBSD, and Linux. It is also available for Microsoft Windows.
