Southern Tutchone

The Southern Tutchone language is spoken by the Tutchone people of the Southern Yukon in Canada. It is a member of the Athabascan language family. Southern Tutchone is one of the most endangered languages in Canada. In the 2016 census, only 85 people reported speaking the language, down from 102 in the 2006 census. Most Southern Tutchone speakers are over the age of 60. The language is threatened by a number of factors, including the loss of fluent speakers and the fact that most young people are not learning it. Southern Tutchone is not taught in schools and there are no immersion programs. There are efforts to revive the language, including a Southern Tutchone dictionary and a language app. However, the future of the language is uncertain. Southern Tutchone is a beautiful language that is an important part of the Tutchone people's heritage. It is at risk of disappearing, but there are people working to save it.
