Lingua Franca Nova

Lingua Franca Nova (LFN) is a constructed language created by C. George Boeree and published in 1997. It is designed to be easy to learn and to serve as a common language for people who speak different first languages. As of 2019, there are an estimated 2,000 speakers of LFN. LFN is based on Romance languages, with significant influences from Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and French. It has a relatively simple grammar, and its vocabulary is mostly derived from Latin. LFN is written with the Latin alphabet. It is also one of the few constructed languages to have its own flag. LFN is designed to be easy to learn for speakers of Romance languages. It has been reported that LFN can be learned in as little as 30 hours. LFN has a number of features that distinguish it from other constructed languages. Perhaps the most notable is its use of "object pronouns", which are pronouns that refer to objects (such as "it" or "them") rather than people. This feature is intended to make LFN more suitable for use in international communication. LFN also has a unique way of indicating whether a verb is in the present, past, or future tense. This is done by adding a suffix to the verb root (-ar, -er, -ir): -a for the present, -e for the past, and -i for the future. For example, the verb "to write" is escrivir in LFN, and the present, past, and future tenses are formed as follows: escrivira (present), escrivire (past), and escriviri (future). LFN is currently used mostly by speakers of Romance languages, though it is also spoken by some people who don't have a first language in that family. It has been used in a number of international events, including the World Science Fiction Convention and the World Fantasy Convention.
