Igbo (Igbo: Asụsụ Igbo) is a Niger-Congo language spoken in Nigeria, mainly in the southeastern part of the country. There are approximately 24 million speakers. The Igbo language is a tonal language with two distinctive tones: high and low. Igbo is written in the Latin alphabet with a few additional characters. Igbo is a member of the Volta-Niger branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages. The Igbo homeland is in the eastern part of Nigeria, stretching from the lower Niger River in the west to the Imo River in the east. Igbo speakers are found in scattered communities throughout Nigeria, as well as in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Igbo is one of the three official languages of Nigeria, along with English and Hausa. It is also a recognized minority language in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Igbo has a rich oral tradition.
