Dakota

Dakota (also known as Sioux) is a Native American language spoken by the Dakota people of the northern Midwest, including parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota in the United States, and Manitoba and Saskatchewan in Canada. The language is closely related to Lakota and Nakota, the other two dialects of the Sioux language. Dakota is one of the few Native American languages with its own alphabet, which was developed in the 1820s by a missionary. The Dakota alphabet consists of 21 letters, including 18 consonants and 3 vowels. Dakota has been declining in recent years, with only a few thousand speakers remaining. However, there are efforts underway to revive the language, including Dakota language immersion schools.
